Abstract Petroleum Chemistry is a specialized course with energy characteristics for chemical engineering majors. The "Step-by-Step" teaching reform was proposed to solve the existing problems during teaching process, such as multiple knowledge points, wide coverage, dull content, low interest in learning, conflict between teaching and learning, single assessment method and so on. By motivating students' learning enthusiasm, solving the conflict between teaching and learning and using modern teaching methods to strengthen the process assessment, students can achieve "Learning by doing, Learning with thinking, Learning with trying" in the process of "Preview-Classroom-Practice", which benefited the learning of theoretical knowledge for students in a timely manner. Then the teaching effect were significantly enhanced.
