Abstract A functional magnetic diatomite material was prepared by modification the Fe3O4 and FeSiO3 on the surface. It was characterized by XRD and infrared spectroscopy. Then the magnetic adsorbent (Fe3O4@D@FeSiO3) was used to adsorb Congo red from aqueous solutions. The ability of magnetic diatomite has been carried out as function of contact time, temperature, pH and concentration. The results indicated that the functional magnetic diatomite was simple in synthesis, low in cost. The functional magnetic diatomite is characterized of simple preparation, low-cost raw materiel, convenient magnetic separation, and exhibited excellent uptake capacity for Congo red.
